I spent too long today messing with remote sdr nodes on KiwiSDR Network. Started on some random jp mw feed parked at around 558 kHz playing straight classical stuff instead of usual static, which led into a rabbit hole of hours spent.
From there it turned into a messy pile of things I didn't really know how to look at. I managed to grab a screenshot of a diagonal ionosonde line slashing across the waterfall display, which is basically just a radar pulse bouncing off the atmosphere to check space weather, and some gibberish morse code strings
I also recorded the Firedrake thing, which sounds like an annoying, heavy mechanical jackhammer pounding away on the frequency like an over-the-horizon military radar trying to block or scan whatever is underneath it. Along with that, I've got a bunch of random audio files, including some Japanese broadcasts that I still have to figure out how to translate or make sense of.
It’s a bizarre look at how much hidden noise, military tracking gear, and weird data is just floating through the airwaves if you take the time to sit there and listen past the static.
